M&M Wedding Cake

Okay, where do I start? This started out to be, or so we thought, a simple and easy cake. The top picture is the first time we set it up. Two layers in each tier with four tiers starting out on the bottom tier with vanilla cake and the next one chocolate, the next one vanilla and so on. Four and a half hours of putting on M&M's and the job was done (or so we thought). About two hours or so later we got a call with the news that the cake was leaning, badly, and in danger of toppling over. In horror we went to the church and found the bride and grandmother of the bride holding the cake up!
Oh no!!! We had to take the cake completely apart and start over. The bottom two tiers were crumbled beyond use and so it was back to the kitchen to start cooking at midnight, the night before the wedding. We had alot of help with the M&M's from the bride and her family. You see, these were special ordered and had to be wiped off and put back on the cake.
Our second attempt with the cake, it started leaning again and we had to take it apart again. The third time we got it put together, we had to unstack the tiers and regroup. Okay, by this time we were pretty stressed and we can't imagine how the bride felt down deep, although she assured us she was okay. And if you know Tabitha, she has an amazing way of handling stress, she lets it roll off her like water on a ducks back. She is the most happy-go-lucky young woman we know and we love that about her.
Fourth time on the cake and we had to say goodbye to the bottom tier and settle for a three tier cake. We sliced up the bottom tier and got that part of the cake ready to serve. So even though they didn't get to have their pictures made with the original cake, Warren and Tabitha were so sweet to us. It was their big day and instead of stressing out, they wanted to make sure we were okay. They are young and already showing alot of patience. This cake (four tiers), served 138. Thanks to all those who helped us with the 911 cake emergency, we love ya'll lots.
Oh, the only thing we could come up with as far as the cake falling is that the table may not have been level and maybe the M&M's were too heavy (4 lbs total). And maybe neither of these, we just don't know.

CONTEST TIME: Just for the sake of doing it, we are giving those who want to participate, a chance to guess how many M&M's are on the wedding cake and the keepsake cake for the bride (total). The closest guess will be treated to a dozen cupcakes, on the house. Good luck! Guesses must be made by January 4, 2012, and cupcakes must be picked up on January 6, 2012. Please be sure to send us an email or message us on Facebook, but if you choose to post in the comments here on the blog, make sure we can get back in touch with you in case you are the winner.

Jacie Jo's Tye-Dye Cake

Jacie Jo wanted a tye-dye cake. Okay. How in this world do you make a tye-dye cake?! That was our thoughts, too, but she knew exactly what she wanted, down to all the colors, writing, and every little detail. What else were we gonna do? We just have to make our "special customers" (family) happy. So we decided to make 65 servings with the bottom tier two layers of yellow, or butter, cake, and the top tier two layers of dark chocolate cake. The entire cake was iced with buttercream and then topped with Fluff (our newest icing that is WONDERFUL!!) and then hand-painted in a tye-dye pattern. The banners are made from modeling chocolate and the #8 is grape-flavored modeling chocolate (another request from Miss Jacie Jo). I know "grape" and "chocolate" are not two flavors you, or anyone would put together, but it works, and well, I add. It tasted like grape taffy, but just melted faster. The kids loved it!

This shows the tye-dye on the top of the cake a little better.

Jacie Jo is posing for her blog appearance.

We love you so much, silly girl! Happy birthday!

Evan's Baptism

Zach and Becca had a baptism service for Evan, which if I understand correctly is our version of a dedication service. So another cake was in order to celebrate. This is a white cake with white buttercream icing and serves about 35 to 40 people. We are so thankful for all the blessings from our heavenly Father. Every child is a gift and a blessing and we are honored to have these precious little ones. Lots of love Evan Michael!

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Zoe

Zoe Jane just loves the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and sings the "hot diggety dog" song at the end.And when she's watching this show, she is in the zone. Nothing distracts her vision. The party was decorated in the usual Clubhouse colors and so was Zoe and brother Evan. The bottom tier is dark chocolate cake with buttercream icing and the top tier is red velvet and chocolate marbled with buttercream icing. The cakes were covered with something we call fluff instead of fondant. It was a last minute idea that we came up with and it worked out great.  It's easier to work with than fondant and tastes better. The Mickey Mouse ears are rice krispies covered in modeling chocolate and all other decorations are made from our modeling chocolate as well. This cake serves about 65.

Happy 2nd Birthday Zoe Jane!!! We love you very much!

Simple Happy Birthday

This cake was for several employee birthdays at a friend's business. "Just a small cake that says Happy Birthday on top" was the only instructions on this one, so simple it was. This cake served 12-14 and was a white cake with vanilla buttercream. Because of the simplicity of this cake, I chose a larger border, and couldn't resist piping on white detail on the sides and top. Thanks, Tish!

Happy Halloween AND Happy 1st Birthday, Braiden

Happy Halloween, but most important, happy first birthday, Braiden! What do the following have in common: one-year-old Braiden, a quirky ghost, tiny pumpkins, and a smiling jack-o-lantern? The answer is, they are all super cute! This Halloween birthday cake, as well as the smash cake, is yellow cake with vanilla buttercream, and serves around 35. Now, I've seen my fair share of smash cakes being grabbed, clawed, hit, poked, smeared, and thrown. The smiling jack-o-lantern smash cake was the first one I've ever seen sat on! Braiden had a ball with this cake! He had it everywhere, and a few bystanders even fell victim to a few flying balls of buttercream. I'm glad I contributed to the ingredients of making the mess instead of having to clean them up! Have fun with that, Katrina. I wish you well. Happy birthday, Braiden, and I hope you had as much fun with the cake as I did watching you play with it.

My Little Pony

Rylee is two!!! I can't believe it. Wow, how time flies! What is better than My Little Pony, right? I, personally, have loved My Little Pony since I was Rylee's age, and was very excited to see them make their rounds again with little girls today. This cake made me a little nervous, mainly because I wanted to do this classic toy justice. This cake is white cake with vanilla buttercream and serves about 35. The design on top is strictly made from buttercream, but was raised in certain areas to achieve a more 3-D look. The border is a simple shell border with pink sweet pea buds. I absolutely loved the chance to do this design, and want to wish Rylee a very happy birthday and year.

When you wish upon a star...

Anna Raley wanted to celebrate her birthday with a princess and she chose Cinderella. Cinderella and Fairy Godmother visited the party to sing, make crafts (tiara's, crowns, and magic wands for everyone) and paint faces.
Her cake was vanilla cake with buttercream icing. The bottom layer served 20 and the doll served 15. Cinderella's dress was made from our modeling chocolate and brushed with pearl dust. This was the first cake we covered completely with modeling chocolate. We thought it turned out great!
She also had 3 dozen tiara butter cookies iced with royal icing brushed with pearl dust. All the kiddos had a good time. Happy birthday, Anna Raley!

Kendall is such a girlie-girl. She's a big fan of Minnie Mouse so Misty went to work on the decorations and put alot of time and thought into this party. It was gorgeous! This cake is a vanilla cake with buttercream icing. The bottom tier is decorated with zebra stripes with a rope border  made from our modeling chocolate.  The second tier is all buttercream with the rope border out of modeling chocolate. The top tier is rice krispies covered in modeling chocolate with the "K" and border also made of modeling chocolate. Serves about 65. The party was a huge success and Kendall loved it. We all did. Beach Bridal Shower

This cake is a celebration of the upcoming marriage of my daughter Heather and soon to be son-in-law Steven. They are getting married at the beach in about 2 months, so the shower and cake were decorated along these lines. The cake is a marbled vanilla and strawberry cake on top and a marbled chocolate and strawberry cake on the bottom. Buttercream icing rounds it out along with a star fish and sea shells all made of modeling chocolate. My sisters did a great job on the shower and I appreciate them for their love and hard work and also thanks to all who came and celebrated with us.

Rubba Dub Dub, Ducky in the Tub

This cake was inspired by a little boy who was very specific about what he wanted. A little ducky in the bath tub was the very thing to put a smile on his face. This is a vanilla cake with buttercream icing. The black tile is made from modeling chocolate, the duck is formed out of rice krispy treats and covered in yellow modeling chocolate, the tub is also formed out of rice krispy treats and covered in fondant, the robe and rug are also made from fondant. Happy Birthday Fisher and Lake!

Carson's 2nd Birthday

My grandson Carson will be 2, August 2nd, but we celebrated it on July 23rd in GA. He loves school buses and the color yellow and also the song, "The wheels on the bus go round and round". He loves any kind of ball and kicking any kind of ball. He loves jumping and swinging and the one thing he does not possess is fear. He reminds me so much of Cory and moments when he reminds me of Kimberly. This cake is a yellow bus with yellow cake and yellow buttercream icing and serves about 40. Had such a great time in GA with the family.

Logan's Mickey Mouse Cake

Kalah had a cute idea in her head for Logan's cake for us to go by and with a little bit of switching around the colors it looks so cute! The top layer is strawberry cake, the second layer is a combo of yellow and chocolate cake and the bottom layer is yellow cake, iced with buttercream icing. The Mickey Mouse heads are made from our modeling chocolate and the ears and #1 are made from royal icing.

Bonner/Strickland Wedding

What an honor to bake and decorate a wedding  and grooms cake. Rebecca is like most brides, very excited and anxious to get married and start her life long journey with Steven.
The wedding cake is three tiers of almond cake with buttercream icing. The brown twigs are of our modeling chocolate and the periwinkle blossoms are made from our royal icing, serves 82.
Steven's cake is well, a tribute to Superman, which I'm sure Rebecca thinks that Superman cannot even compare to her man. The grooms cake is a two layered red velvet cake with cream cheese icing. The suit, tie, hankerchief, superman emblem and flower are all made from our modeling chocolate and serves 80.

Thank you so much Carol and Rebecca and congratulations to the bride and groom!

"Bucket of Balls" for Cruz

Cruz is just your typical boy who is happiest whenever he has a simple ball or balls to play with. Amy couldn't come up with a theme because he didn't seem to be into any of the children's shows but his favorite thing to play with is a bucket of baseballs. His older brother Isaiah plays baseball and his dad helps out with the team so there is an abundance of baseballs around. So, what else, but make him a four layer vanilla cake with cupcakes on top and iced with buttercream icing. The #1, flags, and Cruz label are all made from our modeling chocolate. This cake serves about 55 people. Cruz's smash cake is a vanilla cake with buttercream icing. Thanks Amy and Happy 1st  Birthday Cruz!
Cruz is taking his time diving into something he wouldn't otherwise be allowed to do.
He gets a bite and then shares with his big brother Isaiah, how sweet!

Pretty in Purple

Carly, my granddaughter, is 11 and she always has a definite design in mind when it comes to her birthday cake. She called and said, "Grandma, you got a pencil and piece of paper? I'm gonna tell you how I want my cake to look."I got a pencil and paper, this is how it went down. For the bottom layer I want light purple icing with zebra stripes. For the second layer I want white icing with light and dark purple dots. For the top layer I want dark purple icing with white stripes and the #11 on top made of modeling chocolate. This cake is vanilla with buttercream icing and the zebra stripes and the #11 are model chocolate and serves about 25 to 30. For each girl that was at her spend the night party, she wanted the initial of their first name made from krispy treats drizzled with chocolate and the back side covered with purple modeling chocolate. Happy Birthday Carly, we love you bunches!

Woody Rides Again!

Hunter loves Toy Story and his favorite character is Woody. So, to celebrate his 5th birthday, his mom Sara,  wanted a unique cake that would showcase Woody's character. This is what we came up with; a two-tiered vanilla and chocolate cake with buttercream icing. The boots are rice krispies covered in modeling chocolate, the rope, sheriff's star, #5, cow print vest, buttons and rope border are all made from our modeling chocolate. (serves about 40) It turned out so cute! Thanks Sara  and Happy Birthday Hunter!

50th Wedding Anniversary

Fifty years and counting, wow! I think it's awesome to have a marriage last this long. This means together they've overcome about anything a couple can be put through. And what's left after fifty years of marriage...a bond like no other. Knowing that through thick and thin, your spouse is your best friend and your cushion should life knock you down. This is especially close to my heart because this happens to be my sister and brother-in-law, Anna and Charles Studdard. I love you guys!
This cake is a three-tiered vanilla cake with buttercream icing and the calla lilies are made from our modeling chocolate. We used gold ribbon around the tops and bottoms of each tier. This cake serves about 82 people. Donna, Chrissy, and Tasha, you did a great job!

Connor's YO GABBA GABBA! Cake

I'll have to admit, my two boys haven't went through the YO GABBA GABBA! phase, so this show and all it's characters were totally new to me. I still haven't learned all their names, but I do know that Connor likes them and wants to celebrate his special day with them! This cake is vanilla with vanilla buttercream, and serves 25 people. I sure hope you like it, Connor, and a special thanks to Mrs. Wanda and Tasha. Happy birthday, Connor!
